2010 Jan 8
The Department of Performing & Visual Arts at Augustana College announces a special performance of the comic opera "Too Many Sopranos." The opera is performed by the new Augustana Opera Theatre under the direction of Dr. Lisa Grevlos. Performances are January 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Edith Mortenson Center Theatre. Admission to the performance is $5 for all adults and free for students K-12. "Too Many Sopranos" is one of the newest and most highly acclaimed operas of the 21st century and a comic parody of opera through the ages. It tells the story of four divas arriving at Heaven's gate only to discover there's no more room in the Heavenly Choir. They are sent to Hell where they must perform a selfless act. This act will allow them to bring tenors and basses back to Heaven with them, creating room in the choir for the divas because the balance of male to female voices would now need their soprano voices. Music is by Edwin Penhorwood, with lyrics by Miki L. Thompson. Area students featured in the performance include:CB
